Towing capacity by vehicle, and can yours pull that trailer?

Pick the vehicle, the model year and the exact configuration, then enter the trailer: the checker tests the trailer rating, tongue weight, payload, GVWR and GCWR at once.

How this is computed

The pages that rank for towing capacity belong to dealers and RV lots, who want your phone number, to magazines that print one "up to" figure per model, and to the makers themselves, who bury the full tables in PDF guides. This site copies every configuration row of those guides, with the model year and the page, and then checks your own trailer against the five limits that decide whether a tow is legal: trailer rating, tongue weight, payload, GVWR and GCWR. Nothing to sign up for, nothing for sale.

Towing capacity is not one number per truck. Ford prints 68 rows for the 2026 F-150, from 7,400 lb to 13,500 lb, and the gap comes from the engine, the cab, the wheelbase, the axle ratio and whether the Max Tow Axle and its package are fitted. The 2027 Ram 1500 ranges from 6,330 lb with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque to 11,530 lb with the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo I6 and a 3.92 axle; the 2026 Silverado 1500 from 8,700 lb to 13,300 lb. Even the right row is only a ceiling: it assumes a nearly empty vehicle, usually a driver and one passenger at 150 lb each. Every pound of family, gear, hitch hardware and tongue weight comes out of the payload, and the heavier the load in the cab, the sooner the combination reaches its GCWR. That is why the checker asks for the trailer, the people and the cargo, and shows which limit you hit first.

Conventional (bumper-pull) ratings, the best configuration of each table. The lowest configuration of the same vehicle can be less than half: each vehicle page lists them all.

Five limits, and the one that stops you first

A tow is within the rules only when five numbers hold together. The trailer weight rating is the row of the maker's table that matches your vehicle. The tongue weight must sit between 10 and 15% of the loaded trailer for a bumper-pull hitch, the range Chevrolet prints in its trailering guide; too little and the trailer sways, too much and the rear axle sags. The payload is what the truck may carry on top of its own weight, and the tongue counts as cargo. The GVWR caps the loaded truck alone, the GCWR caps truck and trailer together. Owners usually check the first and forget the last three, and that is where most overloads hide.

The trailer rating itself already spends part of the other limits. Ford and Chevrolet compute it for a vehicle with only a driver and a front passenger of 150 lb each and no cargo (Ford guide, p. 7; Chevrolet guide, p. 7). Ram follows the SAE J2807 procedure and counts 300 lb of passengers, 100 lb of options and 75 lb of hitch hardware (Ram chart notes). Load a family of four, a cooler and bikes in the bed, and the trailer you may legally pull drops pound for pound.

Why the configuration matters more than the model

The headline number of a half-ton pickup belongs to one row. On the 2026 F-150 the 3.5L GTDI V6 reaches 13,500 lb, while the 3.5L GTDI V6 H.O. (Raptor only) tops out at 8,200 lb. On the Ram 1500, the same engine gains thousands of pounds when the axle ratio goes from 3.21 to 3.92, because the shorter gearing lets it pull a heavier combination up a grade. Two trucks with the same badge on the same dealer lot can differ by more than the weight of a small camper.

The fix is simple: find your exact row. The window sticker or the build sheet gives the engine, the axle ratio and the packages; the door pillar gives the GVWR, the axle ratings and, on many trucks, the payload. The checker lists every row of the maker's table for your model year, heaviest first, with the page it comes from, so you can match it line by line.

Heavy duty pickups and fifth wheels

Three-quarter-ton trucks change the scale. The 2026 F-250 is rated up to 22,000 lb on a conventional hitch and 23,000 lb with a gooseneck, and the Ram 2500 up to 20,000 lb. At those weights the hitch type matters: Ram's chart notes require a fifth-wheel hitch above 23,000 lb and a gooseneck above 30,000 lb, and the pin weight of a fifth wheel runs 15 to 25% of the trailer, far more than a bumper-pull tongue. The fifth wheel and gooseneck page works through it.

What the checker cannot see

It does not know the options on your truck, so it cannot know its real curb weight; a scale ticket does. It does not know the receiver installed on your truck, whose own label can be lower than the vehicle rating; Ford, for example, limits a weight-carrying hitch on the F-150 to 5,000 lb in its notes. It does not know your state's trailer brake law. When a maker's table leaves a cell blank, the checker leaves the test open and asks you for the figure from your door label. The method page lists each document and how its rows were read.

Questions owners ask

What is the towing capacity of my truck exactly?

It is the row of the maker's towing table that matches your engine, drive, cab, bed or wheelbase, axle ratio and tow package for your model year. The 2026 F-150 alone has 68 rows between 7,400 lb and 13,500 lb. Your window sticker gives the configuration; the checker above lists every row with the page of the guide it comes from.

Can I tow up to the full rating with my family in the truck?

Usually not. Ford and Chevrolet compute the rating with only a driver and a front passenger of 150 lb each and no cargo, so every extra passenger, cooler or bed load, plus the hitch, reduces what you may pull. The GCWR caps truck and trailer together, and the payload caps what rides on the truck, tongue included.

Where do these towing numbers come from?

From the makers' own documents for each model year: Ford's RV and Trailer Towing Guide, Chevrolet's Trailering Guide, the Ram and Jeep charts and specification sheets on the Stellantis media site, Kia's newsroom specifications and the product information sheets of the Toyota USA newsroom. 2,070 rows in all, each with its page. Dealer pages, magazine lists and forums were never used as a source.

What happens if my trailer is heavier than my truck can tow?

You are outside the ratings the maker certified for brakes, axles, cooling and frame, and an insurer or a court can treat the overload as negligence after a crash. Before buying a trailer, compare its loaded weight, not its dry weight, with your row; the checker shows the heaviest trailer that fits once your people and cargo are aboard.

Should I keep a safety margin below the towing rating?

The ratings are legal ceilings, not targets, and the makers compute them on flat roads at sea level with a nearly empty vehicle. Ford asks owners to cut the GVW and GCW by 2% per 1,000 ft of elevation. The checker lets you choose a margin, 10% by default, and calls a tow "tight" when any limit is used beyond it, so you can see how much room the load leaves.

Where do the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra figures come from?

From the product information sheets that the Toyota USA newsroom publishes for each model year, read page by page in October 2026 for the Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Highlander and RAV4, 2023 to 2026. Toyota prints a rating per grade, cab and bed rather than per axle ratio, and often a curb weight, which the checker uses. No Toyota figure comes from a dealer or a magazine.
