Select the engine, drive, cab, bed and package of your Silverado: the checker finds that line in Chevrolet's 2026 Trailering Guide and tests your trailer against its rating and GCWR.

How this is computed

In Chevrolet's 2026 Trailering Guide the Silverado 1500 is rated between 8,700 lb and 13,300 lb, over 50 lines. The maximum needs the Max Trailering Package and 20" Wheels: it goes to the Duramax 3.0L I-6 4x2 Double Cab with the standard bed, on a GCWR of 19,000 lb. Without any package the best Silverado is the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 Regular Cab 4x2 at 9,900 lb, so the package is worth thousands of pounds on the same truck. Chevrolet derives each rating from the GCWR: GCWR minus curb weight minus 150 lb each for a driver and a front passenger. Every extra passenger, cooler or bed load therefore comes straight out of the trailer you may pull. The TurboMax® four-cylinder tops out at 9,500 lb and the lowest line, 8,700 lb, is a ZR2. Trailers over 2,000 lb need their own brakes by Chevrolet's rule.

The GCWR is where the number comes from

Chevrolet's trailer rating is not a figure of its own. The guide gives each Silverado a gross combination weight rating, the most the loaded truck and the loaded trailer may weigh together, then subtracts the curb weight and 300 lb of people to obtain the figure in the table (2026 Trailering Guide, p. 7 and pp. 26-27). The 2026 Silverado lines use only 7 GCWR values, from 14,000 lb to 19,100 lb. Two trucks on the same GCWR differ only by their curb weight, which is why a regular cab with a long bed often out-tows a crew cab with the same engine.

Working backwards from the top line, 19,000 lb minus 13,300 lb minus 300 lb implies a curb weight of 5,400 lb. The tool below starts from those two figures. Replace the curb weight with your scale ticket and the people and cargo with what you really carry: the result is the heaviest trailer the GCWR still allows, which is often below the table.

Max Trailering Package and wheel size

22 of the 50 lines in the 2026 table carry the Max Trailering Package, and every rating above 9,900 lb needs it. Follow one truck through the table to see what it changes. The Duramax 3.0L I-6 4x2 Double Cab with the standard bed is rated 9,300 lb as built, on a GCWR of 15,000 lb. With the Max Trailering Package it moves to 12,100 lb (GCWR 17,800 lb), and with the Max Trailering Package and 20" Wheels to 13,300 lb (GCWR 19,000 lb). The wheels matter because Chevrolet ties the highest GCWR to the 20-inch version in this guide; the lines with 18-inch wheels sit one GCWR step lower.

Tires count too. The 2024 guide's footnotes on p. 27 warn that the available mud-terrain tires change some Crew Cab 4x4 ratings (2024 guide). The ZR2 lines, printed as a separate short-bed 4x4, are rated no higher than 8,800 lb in 2026. Read the wheel and tire codes on the window sticker before choosing a line.

Engines from the TurboMax to the Duramax

The Duramax 3.0L I-6 covers the widest span, 8,700 lb to 13,300 lb, and holds the top line. The 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 follows closely at up to 13,200 lb, while the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 reaches 11,300 lb with the package. The TurboMax® has no Max Trailering lines in the 2026 table and stays between 8,900 lb and 9,500 lb. These spans are wide enough that the engine alone does not tell you the rating; the cab, bed, drive and package each move it by a few hundred pounds or more. The F-150 and Ram 1500 pages show how the other half-tons compare, and the GVWR and GCWR guide explains the two ceilings.

Brakes, tongue and what the guide leaves aside

Chevrolet asks for trailer brakes on any trailer above 2,000 lb behind a Silverado (Chevrolet guide, p. 6), and for a tongue load of 10 to 15% of the loaded trailer. At the maximum rating the guide caps the conventional tongue at 10% of the trailer, 1,330 lb on the top line. The guide calls its maximum ratings figures for comparison only, since options and cargo reduce them. It also prints fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings for the Silverado 1500 on pp. 28 to 30, which this page does not reproduce; read them in the guide itself if you plan a bed-mounted hitch. See the trailer brakes guide for the controller side.

Questions owners ask

Is the Max Trailering Package worth it on a Silverado 1500?

If the trailer is heavier than 9,900 lb, it is required: no Silverado line above that figure exists without it in the 2026 guide. On the Duramax 3.0L I-6 Double Cab 4x2 it lifts the rating from 9,300 lb to 13,300 lb when paired with 20-inch wheels, because Chevrolet raises the GCWR from 15,000 lb to 19,000 lb.

How does Chevrolet calculate the Silverado trailer rating?

It starts from the GCWR printed for each line and subtracts the curb weight of the truck plus 150 lb for the driver and 150 lb for a front passenger. Nothing else is counted: no rear passengers, no cargo, no hitch hardware. Each of those reduces the trailer you may tow, pound for pound.

What is the towing limit of the Silverado ZR2?

8,800 lb at most in the 2026 Trailering Guide, well under the 13,300 lb of the best Silverado. The ZR2 lines are printed without the Max Trailering Package, on a GCWR of 15,000 lb. Those are the lowest Silverado 1500 ratings in the table, so a ZR2 owner should ignore figures quoted for the model in general.

Can the TurboMax four-cylinder Silverado tow a camper?

It is rated 8,900 lb to 9,500 lb in the 2026 guide, which covers many travel trailers once loaded. Its GCWR is lower than that of the V8 and diesel lines, though, so passengers and cargo cut into the margin faster. Weigh the loaded camper and run your figures through the checker before committing.
