How this is computed

Compiled by Radif Partners · Sources and method · Ford documents read October 20, 2026

Ford's 2026 RV and Trailer Towing Guide gives the Expedition just 5 lines, from 6,000 lb to 9,600 lb, all with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6. The 9,600 lb maximum belongs to the regular-length Expedition with four-wheel drive and the 3.73 axle, on a GCWR of 15,900 lb; the long Expedition MAX tops out at 9,000 lb. Two-wheel-drive versions stop at 6,300 lb, because the heavy-duty towing equipment is tied to four-wheel drive in this guide. Without load bars the receiver is good for 7,000 lb and 700 lb of tongue weight; anything heavier needs a weight-distributing hitch and the Class IV Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow equipment. Ford computes each rating with a 150 lb driver and passenger, a 10% tongue load and SAE J2807. The 2024 guide topped out at 9,300 lb and allowed that on two-wheel drive.

Four-wheel drive or a 6,300 lb ceiling

The 2026 table splits the Expedition into two groups. The four-wheel-drive trucks on the 3.73 axle are rated 9,000 lb to 9,600 lb. The two-wheel-drive trucks on the 3.31 axle are rated 6,000 lb and 6,300 lb, the longer MAX getting the higher figure (2026 guide, p. 38). Ford's notes say that trailers over 7,000 lb require the Class IV Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow equipment, and the 2025 guide adds that it is standard on the 4x4 and needs an aftermarket weight-distributing hitch. That is why no two-wheel-drive line reaches it.

It was different a few years ago. The 2024 guide rated a two-wheel-drive Expedition with the Class IV Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package (536) and the 3.73 axle at 9,300 lb, its highest figure that year (2024 guide, p. 35). If you shop for a used two-wheel-drive Expedition, the model year changes the answer by thousands of pounds.

The hitch: 7,000 lb on the ball, more with bars

The receiver carries its own limits, printed on p. 38. As a weight-carrying hitch it is rated 7,000 lb with 700 lb of tongue, on both lengths. With a weight-distributing hitch, the regular Expedition goes to 9,600 lb and 960 lb, the MAX to 9,000 lb and 900 lb, which match the table. The weight-carrying limit rose over the years: the 2024 guide set it at 6,000 lb and 600 lb. Ford also assumes a frontal area of 55 square feet without the heavy-duty equipment and 60 with it, so a tall, blunt trailer may need a lower load than the table suggests. The weight distribution guide explains the bars; the hitch class guide explains receiver classes.

Wheels, Tremor and altitude

One four-wheel-drive line prints two values. The regular Expedition on 24-inch wheels is rated 9,200 lb, and the same cell gives 9,300 lb for the Tremor with its High Output engine; the checker keeps 9,200 lb, the lower value, since the two footnotes share a cell. A Tremor owner should read p. 38 directly. Altitude lowers every figure: Ford asks drivers to reduce the gross vehicle and gross combination weights by 2% for each 1,000 feet of elevation (Ford guide, p. 9), so a family heading to a mountain campground with a trailer near 9,600 lb needs margin. Trailers over 1,500 lb loaded need their own brakes. The Tahoe page covers the Chevrolet rival, and the F-150 page the half-ton pickup rated in the same Ford guide.

Questions owners ask

Can a two-wheel-drive Expedition tow 9,000 lb?

Not a 2026 model. Ford's 2026 guide rates the two-wheel-drive Expedition at 6,000 lb and the 2WD MAX at 6,300 lb, because trailers over 7,000 lb need heavy-duty towing equipment printed only on four-wheel-drive lines. The 2024 guide was different and rated a 2WD Expedition with package 536 at 9,300 lb.

Does the Expedition MAX tow less than the regular length?

Yes, at the top. With four-wheel drive and the 3.73 axle, the regular Expedition is rated 9,600 lb and the MAX 9,000 lb in the 2026 guide, and the weight-distributing receiver follows the same split. In two-wheel drive it is the reverse, 6,300 lb for the MAX against 6,000 lb.

What tongue weight does Ford expect behind an Expedition?

10% of the loaded trailer, the share Ford uses for its ratings. The receiver accepts 700 lb as a weight-carrying hitch and up to 960 lb with load bars on the regular length. Every pound of tongue also counts against the payload on the door label, together with passengers and cargo.
