Pick your Ranger's engine and drive: the checker reads its line in Ford's 2026 towing guide and tests your trailer, people and cargo against the rating and GCWR.
2026 Ford Ranger: can it tow 5,000 lb?
Within the ratings checked
Rating for this configuration: 7,500 lb, GCWR 12,370 lb. 2026 Ford RV & Trailer Towing Guide, p. 27.

No curb weight in the Ford guide: the GCWR test uses GCWR minus the rating minus the 300 lb of people the rating assumes.

In Ford's 2026 RV and Trailer Towing Guide every Ranger except the Raptor is rated 7,500 lb, whether it has the 2.3L EcoBoost with two- or four-wheel drive or the 2.7L EcoBoost V6, always with the 3.73 axle and the Trailer Tow Package (53R). The Raptor, with its 3.0L EcoBoost V6 and 4.27 axle, is rated 5,510 lb. That headline figure has a condition: Ford says not to exceed 3,500 lb when towing from the bumper alone, and requires the 53R package for any trailer above it. The receiver is rated 7,500 lb with 750 lb of tongue, the step bumper 3,500 lb with 350 lb. The three standard lines differ only in GCWR, from 12,370 lb to 12,745 lb, which means the heavier trucks get more combined weight to carry the same trailer. Ford counts a 150 lb driver and passenger.
Bumper, receiver, package
A Ranger has three towing limits stacked on top of each other, and the table shows only the last one. The rear step bumper with a ball is rated 3,500 lb and 350 lb of tongue load. The receiver hitch is rated 7,500 lb and 750 lb, or 5,510 lb and 550 lb on the Raptor. And the table's 7,500 lb needs the Trailer Tow Package (53R), which Ford requires for every trailer above 3,500 lb (2026 guide, p. 27). A Ranger with a ball on the bumper and no package is a 3,500 lb truck, however the brochure reads.
Ford also assumes a frontal area for the trailer: 30 square feet without the package and 55 with it. A tall box trailer pushes far more air than a flat utility trailer of the same weight, and the ratings assume a trailer within that area. The hitch class guide explains how bumper, Class III and Class IV receivers differ.
Ranger: tongue load of your trailer
Tongue weight for this trailer
750 lb to 1,125 lb
| At 10% of the trailer | 750 lb |
| At 15% of the trailer | 1,125 lb |
| Fifth wheel or gooseneck (pin weight) | 1,125 lb to 1,875 lb |
One rating, three GCWRs
The three standard lines share the 7,500 lb rating but not the GCWR: 12,370 lb for the 2.3L with two-wheel drive, 12,590 lb with four-wheel drive and 12,745 lb for the 2.7L. Subtract the rating and Ford's 300 lb of people and the implied curb weight rises from 4,570 lb to 4,945 lb. In effect the rating is held at the receiver's 7,500 lb while the GCWR follows each truck's weight, so the heavier Ranger is not penalised. That holds only with two people aboard. Every extra passenger or bag in the bed eats into a margin that is the same on all three.
The Raptor is the exception. Its line, on the 4.27 axle, comes with a GCWR of 11,465 lb and a 5,510 lb rating, and the 53R package is standard on it. For trailers between 5,510 lb and 7,500 lb, a regular Ranger is the one rated for the job.

The previous Ranger
The 2023 guide covers the previous generation, sold as SuperCab or SuperCrew with the 2.3L only. It printed 4 lines at 3,500 lb for trucks without the package and 7,500 lb with it (2023 guide, p. 37). The bumper rule was the same, so a used Ranger without the 53R hitch is limited to 3,500 lb whatever its year. Ford requires trailer brakes above 1,500 lb loaded and computes ratings with a 10% tongue. For other midsize choices see the Colorado page, and the Maverick for a smaller pickup.
