The 2027 Ram 1500 is rated to tow between 6,330 lb and 11,530 lb, across the 31 lines of Ram's 2027 Trailer Towing Charts. The top figure belongs to the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo I6 in a 4x2 Quad Cab, Tradesman trim with the 6'4" box and the 3.92 rear axle, on a GCWR of 17,000 lb. The axle ratio is the biggest single lever in this chart: the very same truck with the 3.21 axle is rated 8,430 lb, because Ram gives it a GCWR of only 13,900 lb. The bottom line, 6,330 lb, is the 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque 4x4 Crew Cab on the 3.21 axle. Ram prints a base weight on each line, not a curb weight with people aboard, and its notes recommend a weight-distributing hitch above 5,000 lb. The 2026 chart peaked at 11,610 lb and the 2024 chart at 12,750 lb, so the current trucks are rated a little lower than the ones of a few years ago.

Three axle ratios, three ceilings

Ram sells the 1500 with three rear axle ratios in the 2027 chart, and the ratio decides the GCWR that Ram assigns to the truck. Every 3.92 line sits between 7,300 lb and 11,530 lb. The 3.55 lines run from 7,330 lb to 8,580 lb, and the 3.21 lines from 6,330 lb to 8,430 lb. The gap is not a matter of trim or cab: the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo I6 4x2 Quad Cab with the 6'4" box loses 3,100 lb of rating when the 3.92 axle is swapped for the 3.21, with the same base weight of 5,027 lb printed on both lines (2027 chart, p. 1).

A numerically higher ratio turns the driveshaft more times for each turn of the wheels, which lets the engine pull a heavy combination up a grade without running out of breath. Ram reflects that in the GCWR, and the trailer rating follows from it. The window sticker or the axle code on the build sheet tells you which ratio your truck has; the axle ratio guide explains how to read it.

What the printed base weight leaves out

Ford and Chevrolet print a trailer rating already reduced by a driver and a passenger. Ram works the other way round: each line shows a base weight, a GVWR, a GCWR and a payload, and the 2025 chart spells out its arithmetic in note 6, where the combined weight equals base weight plus EPA options, the trailer package, the maximum trailer and 300 lb of driver and passenger (2025 chart notes). On the top 2027 line, GCWR minus rating minus base weight leaves 443 lb. That small margin is all there is for the occupants, the options and the tow hardware; Ram's heavy duty charts list 300 lb for passengers and 100 lb for options in the same calculation (Ram heavy duty chart notes).

So a crew cab with four adults, a cooler and a toolbox in the bed eats into the trailer allowance pound for pound once it passes those assumptions. Put your own figures in below: the GCWR and base weight are those of the top 2027 line, and the tool shows the trailer still allowed by the GCWR.

Payload, tongue load and the hitch

The largest payload in the 2027 chart is 2,410 lb, on the 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque 4x2 Quad Cab; most crew cabs print a few hundred pounds less. The 2024 chart notes say that payload and trailer weight rating are mutually exclusive, which means you cannot fill the bed to the payload figure and hitch the maximum trailer at the same time. With Ram's recommended tongue load of 10% for a conventional hitch, a trailer at the 11,530 lb rating presses 1,153 lb on the ball, and that counts against payload. Ram recommends a weight-distributing hitch for trailers over 5,000 lb (2024 chart, notes 6, 8 and 9); the weight distribution page covers the setup, and the payload guide the door label.

Why the newer charts print less

The 2024 chart reached 12,750 lb with the 5.7L HEMI V8 on a GCWR of 18,350 lb. From 2025 the top line belongs to the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo I6 and stays near 11,600 lb: 11,610 lb in 2026, 11,530 lb in 2027. Between the last two charts the top truck's base weight went from 4,971 lb to 5,027 lb, the GCWR stayed at 17,000 lb, and the rating fell by 80 lb. Ram does not explain the change in its notes, so read the chart of your own model year rather than a figure quoted for another one. The 6.2L supercharged HEMI V8 lines stop at 8,580 lb, and the 5.7L HEMI V8 reaches 11,370 lb. Questions owners ask

Which axle ratio should a Ram 1500 have for towing?

The 3.92. In the 2027 chart every 3.92 line is rated between 7,300 lb and 11,530 lb, while the 3.21 lines never pass 8,430 lb. On the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo I6 the switch alone is worth 3,100 lb, since Ram raises the GCWR with the shorter gearing. Check the axle code on the build sheet before trusting any figure.

Why is the 2027 Ram 1500 rated below the 2024 truck?

The 2024 chart topped out at 12,750 lb with the 5.7L HEMI V8 and a GCWR of 18,350 lb. The 2027 chart stops at 11,530 lb with the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo I6 and a GCWR of 17,000 lb. Ram gives no reason in its notes; the lower combined rating and a slightly heavier base weight account for the gap line by line.

Does the base weight in the Ram chart include passengers?

No. The base weight is the truck alone. Ram adds the occupants when it computes the rating: 300 lb of driver and passenger, plus options and the trailer package, according to its chart notes. Anyone or anything beyond that, such as rear passengers or a bed load, has to come out of the trailer allowance or the payload.

How much can a Ram 1500 with the 3.6L V6 eTorque pull?

Between 6,330 lb and 8,100 lb in the 2027 chart, across 7 lines. The highest figure needs the 3.55 axle; with the 3.21 axle the V6 stays in the lower part of that range. For campers near the top of the range, the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo I6 lines offer far more headroom.
