How this is computed

Compiled by Radif Partners · Sources and method · Chevrolet documents read October 20, 2026

Chevrolet's 2026 Trailering Guide rates the Tahoe between 7,600 lb and 8,400 lb, in a short table of 12 lines, all on the 3.23 axle. The maximum goes to the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 with two-wheel drive and the Max Trailering Package, on a GCWR of 14,500 lb; four-wheel drive costs a little on every engine. The figure that matters most for many owners comes from the hitch, not the table: with a plain weight-carrying hitch the Tahoe may pull only 5,000 lb with 600 lb of tongue weight. Above that, Chevrolet requires a weight-distributing hitch and sway control, and caps the tongue at 1,250 lb. Ratings assume a 150 lb driver and front passenger only, so a full third row comes off the allowance. The top and bottom figures are the same in every guide from 2024 to 2026.

Two limits, depending on the hitch

A Tahoe owner deals with two ceilings. The table gives the rating of the vehicle, from 7,600 lb to 8,400 lb. A note under it gives the limit of the hitch setup: a weight-carrying hitch, the ball mount on its own, is good for 5,000 lb of trailer and 600 lb of tongue weight. Chevrolet requires a weight-distributing hitch and sway control for any tongue heavier than 600 lb (2026 Trailering Guide, p. 41). So the last 3,400 lb of the top rating only exist once the load bars are on.

The tongue has its own cap. Chevrolet wants 10 to 15% of the loaded trailer on the tongue, up to 1,250 lb, without exceeding the rear axle rating or the GVWR. At 15%, the cap is reached with a trailer of about 8,300 lb, below the top rating; at the maximum trailer weight the guide limits the conventional tongue to 10%. Put your own trailer weight in below to see the range Chevrolet expects; the weight distribution guide explains how the bars spread that load.

Drive, engine and the Max Trailering Package

Every Tahoe line uses the same 3.23 axle, so the spread comes from the engine, the drive and the package. Four-wheel drive takes 200 lb off the top truck and between 100 lb and 300 lb on the others, because it adds weight under the same GCWR. The Max Trailering Package raises the GCWR of the gas V8s, and that is where it pays: the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 with two-wheel drive goes from 7,900 lb to 8,400 lb. The Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel I-6 already carries the higher GCWR without the package, so on the 2WD diesel the rating is 8,200 lb either way. The 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 spans 7,600 lb to 8,200 lb; the lowest line, 7,600 lb, is the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 with 4x4 and no package.

The standard Heavy-Duty Trailering Package adds an external transmission fluid cooler and an engine oil cooler. Working from the GCWR, 14,500 lb minus 8,400 lb minus 300 lb of people implies a curb weight near 5,800 lb for the top line; change it to your own figures below.

A family SUV with a family aboard

The rating counts a driver and one front passenger. A Tahoe often travels with a full second and third row, a cargo area full of bags and a roof box, and all of that weight beyond the first 300 lb comes off the trailer the GCWR allows, while the tongue weight comes off the payload. Trailers above 2,000 lb need their own brakes by Chevrolet's rule (Chevrolet guide, p. 6). Since the maximum and minimum have not moved between 2024 and 2026, a used Tahoe from those years reads the same way. For other full-size SUVs, see the Expedition page, and the SUV towing guide for the wider field.

Questions owners ask

Can a Tahoe tow without a weight-distributing hitch?

Yes, up to 5,000 lb of trailer and 600 lb of tongue weight, according to Chevrolet's 2026 guide. Above a 600 lb tongue, a weight-distributing hitch and sway control are required. Since a 5,000 lb trailer at 10% already puts 500 lb on the ball, most campers near that weight call for load bars anyway.

Does four-wheel drive reduce Tahoe towing capacity?

Slightly. In the 2026 guide the 4WD version of each engine is rated a little below the 2WD version, 8,200 lb against 8,400 lb for the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 with the Max Trailering Package. The GCWR stays the same, so the extra weight of the four-wheel-drive hardware comes straight off the trailer rating.

Which Tahoe engine tows the most?

The 5.3L EcoTec3 V8, at 8,400 lb with two-wheel drive and the Max Trailering Package. The Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel I-6 reaches 8,200 lb and the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 8,200 lb. The gaps are small, a few hundred pounds, so drive and package matter as much as the engine.
