Kia's newsroom specifications, the latest read for this site being the 2025 page, rate the Telluride at 5,000 lb on almost every trim and 5,500 lb on the EX X-PRO and SXP X-PRO with AWD. No 2026 figures were in Kia's newsroom data used here, so a 2026 owner should confirm the rating in the owner's manual. All 17 configurations of 2025 use the 3.8L V6; the figure depends only on the trim and the drive, front-wheel or all-wheel. Every front-wheel-drive Telluride is rated 5,000 lb. The 5,500 lb rating first appeared in 2023 with the X-Pro trims; from 2020 to 2022 every Telluride read 5,000 lb. Kia prints curb weights rather than a rating reduced by passengers, and its page states no hitch or brake conditions, so the GVWR and the owner's manual set the other limits. The X-Pro has about 1,395 lb between curb weight and GVWR for people, cargo and the tongue.
Trim decides, not engine
Kia's pages list a single engine, the 3.8L V6, so the towing figure moves with the trim and the drive alone. The 2025 specification page lists 10 trims: EX X-PRO, SXP X-PRO, EX X-LINE, EX, S, SX X-LINE, SX, SXP X-LINE, SXP, LX (2025 specifications). Each is printed with a front-wheel-drive and an all-wheel-drive rating where both exist. Only the X-Pro trims, EX X-PRO and SXP X-PRO, reach 5,500 lb, and only with all-wheel drive. Every other trim, the X-Line versions included, reads 5,000 lb. Check the badge and the window sticker: the trim name is the whole answer here.

Model years 2020 to 2025
The early Telluride had a single rating. From 2020 to 2022, every trim and drive in Kia's pages reads 5,000 lb. The 2023 page added X-Pro trims at 5,500 lb; the names shifted over the years, with the SX X-PRO and SXP X-PRO in 2023 and the EX X-PRO and SXP X-PRO in 2025. A used Telluride bought for a 5,500 lb trailer must therefore be an X-Pro from 2023 or later. This site has no 2026 Kia document; until one is published in the same form, treat any 2026 figure you see with caution and read the owner's manual.
The room between curb weight and GVWR
Kia does not print a payload, but it prints a curb weight and a GVWR, and the difference is the most that people, cargo and the trailer tongue may add. On the EX X-PRO with all-wheel drive, 5,917 lb minus 4,522 lb leaves 1,395 lb. On the front-wheel-drive LX, 5,776 lb minus 4,248 lb leaves 1,528 lb. A trailer at 5,500 lb adds 550 lb to 825 lb of tongue load at the usual 10 to 15% share, the range Chevrolet prints (Chevrolet guide, p. 8). With eight seats and their occupants, that room goes quickly. The curb weight we use is the higher of the two values Kia prints for each trim; 8 lines even print two pairs of figures, so weigh your own Telluride if the margin is thin.

What Kia leaves unsaid
Ford and Chevrolet tie their ratings to a hitch package, a tongue limit and a brake rule. Kia's specification page states none of that: no hitch requirement, no tongue cap, no trailer brake threshold. Those conditions sit in the owner's manual, which this site did not read, so treat the rating as the upper bound and the manual as the rulebook. For midsize rivals with fuller published conditions, see the Explorer and the Grand Cherokee; the travel trailer weight guide helps size a camper for a 5,000 lb limit.
